Women’s Rugby at Portsmouth Rugby Club

Looking for a sport that mixes fitness, teamwork and a bit of fun? Women’s rugby at Portsmouth RFC might be the answer. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just curious, the club welcomes anyone willing to give it a go. We’ve built a supportive environment where you can learn the basics, improve your skills and make new friends.

Why Play Women’s Rugby?

Rugby hits a sweet spot between cardio and strength training. One session will have you sprinting, tackling and passing, so you get a full‑body workout without feeling like you’re doing a boring gym routine. The sport also teaches quick decision‑making – you learn to read the game and act fast. Off the field, the camaraderie is real. Players stick together through win‑loss cycles, training drills and post‑match socials. If you enjoy a community that cheers each other on, you’ll feel right at home.

How to Get Involved

Getting started is simple. First, swing by our clubhouse on a Tuesday or Thursday evening for a free “come‑and‑try” session. Bring a pair of trainers, a water bottle and an open mind. Our coaches will run you through basic handling, safe tackling and the rules of the game. No previous experience needed – we start at a level that suits beginners and build up.

Training runs twice a week, usually Tuesdays at 7 pm and Thursdays at 6 pm. Sessions last about 90 minutes and end with a cool‑down chat where you can ask questions. We also run a weekend fixtures program where our women’s side faces other clubs in the region. Watching the squad in action is a great way to see where you could fit in.

Want to stay in the loop? Sign up for our newsletter on the website, follow the club’s social feeds, or pop into the clubhouse to grab a sign‑up sheet. We keep members informed about match days, social events and any special workshops – like first‑aid training or nutrition talks.

If you’re a parent or guardian, you’ll be glad to know we follow World Rugby safety guidelines. All players wear proper protective gear and our coaches are trained to spot injury risks. We even have a dedicated physiotherapist who drops in once a month for injury prevention tips.

Ready to lace up? Drop an email to the women’s team manager, give us a call, or just show up at the next practice. Portsmouth RFC is all about making rugby accessible, and our women’s side is growing fast. Join us, get fit, have a laugh and become part of a team that cares about each other on and off the pitch.
