Coach's Corner

Following several years away coaching the RN Youth, it was with huge anticipation that I returned to Coach the club that I first played for as a 17 year old Stoker, having been spared a weekend duty by the intervention of 'Yorky' Loveday. Now, just over 8 years later, I find some of the same old faces occupying the clubhouse and in some cases still telling the same stories, and some bright new talent on the training park.

The challenge I set before the players at the start of pre-season was to embrace the changes I was introducing, question what they had previously done, and to enjoy themselves both on match days and training nights.

The results so far and he way in which we have played suggest that the players are takingon the challenge and responding well to the new coaching.

New players are still required as the age old problem of servicemen moving on will impact the team very shortly. The management and coaching staff are constantly recruiting, but the players themselves can help. If you know of people that are suitable, bring them down t training. We pride ourselves on being an open and friendly club, playing at the best facilities in the area. Help the club sustain the excellent start to the season.

Selection

I couldn't let the first edition of 'Coach's Corner' go by without a few words regarding selection and the policy being employed.

Having returned to the club after several years away, many of the players are new to me. To assess them fully I have to see them in a competitive fixture, and more importantly, with a variety of players around them. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the competition for the first XV Scrum Half role. Three players are currently vying to be first choice, each has strengths and weaknesses and each needs to be seen behind a strong first team pack. Hence the rotation in selection. This situation is being mirrored throughout the squad and the competition is healthy in all positions.

Whilst it would be normal policy to say 'No Train No Play', the various Service and work commitments means that it is not always possible and it would always remain my goal to field the strongest possible side each and every Saturday. However, it is at training that I, along with the other coaches can see the potential of players as well as develop the individual game. Considering the changes we have made to the way we play our game, training would seem essential to avoid being off the pace on match days.

Throughout my coaching I have always aimed to be transparent in my selection decision. I am always happy to talk to players about their game and will always aim to inform the individual of selection prior to the announcement, either personally or with the support of the other coaches and Burt.
